Owls Vs Saints: Team news

Last updated : 17 April 2009 By C. Morris

Sheffield Wednesday host Southampton at Hillsborough on Saturday looking for an upturn in home form and an improvement on the shoddy defending that saw them lose a two goal lead at QPR on Easter Monday.

Wednesday were all over the place at the back throughout that game and could easily have conceded two or three more than the three they did let in.

Captain Richard Wood was replaced at centre-half by Mark Beevers but the defending didn't improve and so it is unclear as to who may play there against the Saints with the two mentioned and Richard Hinds all looking out of form.

At right-back Lewis Buxton had a torrid time in the capital on Monday and could be replaced by Frank Simek but the American has been carrying a groin injury and may not be risked.

Sean McAllister could be in line to return in midfield and Jermaine Johnson could also start if Laws chooses to go at the Saints with Etienne Esajas expected to keep his place wide left.

If that is the case then top scorer Marcus Tudgay would get a run out in his preferred striking role. Luke Varney will be available for selection for the final time as he is to be recalled by his parent club Derby with a view to playing a significant role in their final few games of the season.

The other options in attack are Leon Clarke and Francis Jeffers but Akpo Sodje has sustained yet another injury and will play no further part this season.

Southampton come to Hillsborough buoyed by a home victory over Crystal Palace on Monday but they remain in the Coca Cola Championship relegation zone and so are still desperate to pick up points.

The 1-0 win over Palace was only their 4th home win of the season and so the positive result may see them starting with the same eleven again at Hillsborough.

Marek Saganowski, a scorer in the UEFA Champions League for Aalborg this season will be hoping for a recall having appeared as a substitute on Monday and been involved in the decisive goal.

Wednesday have not won a home game in 4 attempts and likewise Southampton have not managed to win any of their last four on their travels.

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at St Mary's in December and Southampton will be looking to avoid anything like a repeat of last seasons visit to Hillsborough which saw them trounced 5-0.
