Pilgrims Vs Owls: Team news

Last updated : 28 August 2009 By C. Morris

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Plymouth on Saturday looking to put the embarrassment of Tuesday's Carling Cup exit to Port Vale behind them and improve on their mid-table league position.

The Owls are likely to make a number of changes to the team beaten 2-0 at Vale Park and could well field the same eleven that impressively swept Scunthorpe aside at Hillsborough last weekend.

That would mean a return for Luke Varney in attack. The striker, on loan from Derby was cup-tied in midweek but should return in place of the suspended Francis Jeffers. Varney was impressive on debut last Saturday but missed a number of chances and will be eager to open his account for the season.

Elsewhere, Darren Purse, Richard Wood and Lewis Buxton are expected to return to the back for in place of Richard Hinds, Mark Beevers and Frank Simek whilst Tommy Miller, Etienne Esajas and Sean McAllister could miss out in midfield with Michael Gray, James O'Connor and Jermaine Johnson expected to return to the starting line-up.

Strikers Akpo Sodje and Leon Clarke could both be in contention for a place in the squad as they look to overcome injury problems but one player definitely out of the Owls team is youngster Luke Boden who has joined Northampton on loan for the next month.

Plymouth have been mis-firing up front and could probably do with the services of fictitious forward Ditmar Van Nostrilboy as brought to fame by Paul Whitehouse in a TV advert. Back in the real world, ex-Owls boss Paul Sturrock could bring in Celtic loan striker Cillian Sheridan and/or Alan Gow at the expense of Rory Fallon with Jamie Mackie possibly operating in a wider attacking role. Plymouth also have the option of former Wednesday goal-getter Steven MacLean but are still without summer signing Bradley Wright-Phillips through injury.

Argyle have had a difficult start to the season, having been knocked out of the League Cup in the first round they are yet to win so far and have picked up just two points from four league games. Wednesday are three points better off and will be hoping to pick up their first away win of the season having drawn one and lost one on the road in the league so far.

Last season saw the Owls thumped 4-0 at Home Park but prior to that the Owls had one twice in a row at Plymouth, both by a score of 2-1.
