Player review No2, Tommy Spurr

Sheffield Wednesday defender Tommy Spurr, like many of his team mates, will have few fond memories of the 2010/11 season. Having come through the ranks at Hillsborough to become a 1st team regular bright things were expected of the tall defender. Spurr made the left-back spot his own in 2006/07 and has been a fixture in the team ever since. His development in his first couple of seasons earned high praise and attracted interest from rival Championship clubs but in the past two campaigns he has not maintained his development.

As part of a struggling side and a porous defensive unit the youngster – despite more than 150 appearances Spurr is still only 23 years old – seems to have lost confidence in his own ability. His level of performances during the last campaign dropped to the extent that former manager Alan Irvine opted to bring in new recruits to fill the left-back slot in the January transfer window.

Although the new signings did lit to improve things Spurr has been unable to regain his place and has hardly had a look in since new manager Gary Megson took over at Hillsborough in February.

Spurr’s effort and commitment has never been called into question and this combined with the fact that he developed through the ranks at the club has meant that the fans have been more willing to give him a chance and want to see him succeed. However as he has seemingly lost his way with the Owls and doesn’t appear to part of the manager’s 1st team plans Spurr may be better suited to a fresh start at another club to get his career back on track.
