Positive backing or noise pollution?

Many football fans see going to the match on a Saturday as perhaps a chance of escaping the earache that they might be subjected to at home but some may leave Hillsborough after the game this coming Saturday with their ears well and truly ringing.

Sheffield Wednesday announced today on their official website, www.swfc.co.uk that the Kop band will be making a return to the stadium on Saturday for the home fixture against Swansea.

The band became synonymous with the club in the 1990's following the team home and away creating an atmosphere that was more or less unique in this country before more and more clubs began to follow suit.

The band gained national notoriety and became the official band of the England international football team in 1996. They still play at England matches and have worked in other sporting contests as well including giving their backing to popular boxer Ricky Hatton.

In the seasons after the Owls relegation from the Premier League the novelty began to wear off and the band has not played at Hillsborough since 2005

Although they have not been able to perform, the members of the band have continued to support Wednesday as season ticket holders and the club state that they have received numerous requests for them to return with their instruments.

Despite this opinion amongst fans is certainly divided on the issue of whether the band should play at Owls matches and it will be interesting to see what sort of reaction they get on Saturday.
