Stoke seen off at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday moved up into the top 6 in the Championship table on Tuesday evening thanks to a hard fought 1-0 win at home to Stoke City.

The Owls started the game well and were good value for their 1-0 half-time lead, though they had to wait until the 43rd minute to hit the front. Potters defender Liam Lindsay's attempted clearance from a Fletcher flick-on was charged down by Luongo and the Australian midfielder had a clear run on goal before calmly slotting the ball past visiting goalkeeper Adam Federici.

Wednesday were slow to get going in the 2nd half and Stoke tried to capitalise. Iorfa did well to deny the visitors with a perfectly timed challenge in the penalty area and just after the hour Dawson made a fine low save to keep out Gregory's header.

The Owls responded and Harris saw his snap shot tipped over the bar by Federici. Fernando Forestieri made a late appearance for the home side which gave them more attacking intent and had they made better decisions in the final third they could have put the game to bed.

As it was, Stoke failed to create another clear cut chance and Wednesday were happy to see and ended to a frustrating encounter that was punctuated by a string of injuries that saw around 15 minutes of injury time played in total.
Next up for Garry Monk's side is Leeds United at Hillsborough on Saturday.
