Sheffield Wednesday Womens team latest news

Last updated : 31 May 2009 By C. Morris

Sheffield Wednesday will officially be known as Sheffield Wednesday Womens Football Club from this season. The slight change in the name has been authorised by FA HQ and the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA. Although only a slight change in the format of the name this is all part of the new look club. Under the leadership of Head coach Daniel Duke and the new committee, headed by Chairman Jeff Maslin, they have put together an ambitious 3 year plan to return to the top tier of ladies football. Duke commented" The hard work starts now for all the players, staff and friends of Sheffield Wednesday. There is no reason why we should not be playing on the same field as Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea on a regular basis. We are currently looking for players with drive, ambition and above all else professionalism. As from the 1st June my phone will be red hot speaking to players that we have identified and have the right calibre and attributes to help us with our plan to return to the Premiership". Trials will be held at the back end of June (Dates TBA).

They have also unveiled their new assistant coach to help Duke next season. Liam Kelly joined the club last week. Liam is a qualified coach, working towards his UEFA B licence which he hopes to complete in October. With vast experience in the Ladies game Liam is presently Area Community Manager for Leeds United Football in the Community. He managed Leeds Carnegie Reserves and was also performance analyst for the first team. Before joining Wednesday Liam was helping out at Guiseley Ladies. Jeff Maslin remarked "We would like to welcome Liam to our club. We had 6 people apply for the job and Liam stood out by miles. With Dan and Liam's experience and understanding of the Ladies game I believe a management team is now being put together that will get us into the Premiership. The future is definitely bright."

Phase 1 is now nearly complete; with the new ground deal (Worksop Town FC), new name, new committee and hopefully new faces to come into the squad. A new website is being designed at present which should be up and running by the beginning of June
(
www.SWWFC.net ).

This all costs money and time but if you are interested in joining our team we have several positions we are currently looking at filling; Club Secretary, Reserve Team coach and 1st Team Physio are available at the moment. So if you are looking to get involved with any aspect of Wednesday, whether it be sponsorship or part of the staff please contact either Jeff or Dan on
