Simek on Derby heartbreak - exclusive

Brian Laws' side played some fantastic football at times with only their final ball letting them down, but Jones' brilliant free kick in stoppage time put the home side level on points with table toppers Birmingham City.

“You could say that football is a cruel game sometimes,” Simek told Footymad. “They beat us with a sucker punch at our place and did the exact same thing at theirs and it hurts.

“We did alright, we were as solid as ever, we created chances and limited theirs. We frustrated them at times and we had three or four corners on the bounce at the start of the second half but it was just one of those games where they caught us at the end with a great free kick.”

The Owls have won 6 out of 7 away games with Laws in charge before yesterday's 1-0 defeat and the American full-back can easily take positives from the Wednesday's performance.

He added: “Despite the defeat we have confidence in the squad and we are playing well especially away from home, we have won our last five I think previous to Derby so it's disappointing to not get anything, the way we have been playing we are disappointed not to get at least a point here.”

Simek and Tommy Spurr both picked up their fifth bookings of the season yesterday but they will be available to play against Manchester City on Tuesday – but will be suspended for the home game with Sunderland on Saturday.
