Sheffield Wednesday suffered only their second home defeat of the season as Rotherham took advantage of a poor first half display from the hosts to pick up a valuable 3 points in their battle to avoid the drop.

Wednesday were out of sorts for most of the first half with Grant Ward and Danny Ward posing problems. Forward Matt Derbyshire spurned a goo chance volleying wide early on but when Lee Frecklington played in a low cross just after the 20 minute mark some hesitant defending allowed the ball to reach the back post and he made no mistake tapping home from close range.

Aiden McGeady seemed off the pace during the first half but a moment of great skill on the byline gave him the chance to cut inside and fire a low shot on goal. The strike took a deflection off Michael Turner add beat Lee Camp but with Wednesday celebrating what seemed like an equalizer the referee chalked off the goal after consulting his assistant on the line with Turner appearing to have been in an offside position.

Joao replaced McGeady at half-time with Wednesday going to 3 up front and from that moment on it was one way traffic with the Millers barely able to make any impression in the Wednesday half. Ross Wallace hit the bar from the edge of the area, Camp saved well from a low Joao drive and also stopped a goalbound Wallace free-kick with his feet.

Frustration grew as the Rotherham back line held firm for a rare clean sheet and a valuable away win.

The result leaves Wednesday clinging on to a play-off spot with a tough trip to Brighton to come in midweek.
