Smith happy at left-back

A late equaliser from the away side cancelled out Jon-Paul McGovern’s first goal for the club in a game which Wednesday should really have taken the spoils from.

The Owls hit the woodwork three times but were unable to make their dominance count.

Winger Smith, who has been restored to the team in a defensive mould, told Footymad: “It was a big blow. I think we outplayed them in the game, we had plenty of possession and opportunities at goal but it was very unfortunate that we conceded at the very end.”

On his new role, the former Burnley and Hartlepool man admits he is more than willing to play at left-back but is even happier to get into the first team again.

He added: “I don’t mind playing left-back, I have played there before so it doesn’t come as that big a shock as people think it has but I am just happy to play first-team football and play where the gaffer tells me to.

“It isn’t that much of an adaptation, I just do what I normally do but further back - I am a hard-working midfielder and now concerned about getting clean sheets instead of scoring goals.

“I have to stop myself going forward all the time and control myself as it is a natural reaction to go forward but now I have to concentrate on the defensive aspects.”
