Stags too strong for Owls

Pre-season setback for Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday were defeated in their 2nd official friendly game of the summer on Tuesday evening, going down 2-1 to Mansfield Town at Field Mill.

Wednesday were without a few first team regulars in their squad, including the likes of Westwood, Pudil, Lee, Hooper and Joao but still fielded plenty of experience such as Lees, Bannan, Reach, Hutchinson, Forestieri and Nuhiu.

The Owls started the game quite well but Mansfield grew into the contest as the first half wore on and took the lead 5 minutes before the break, Benning firing past Cameron Dawson after an initial strike on goal by the home side had been blocked.

Wednesday looked for a leveler after the break and almost had it within 5 minutes, Nuhiu hitting the crossbar from a low ball across goal by Palmer. Midway through the half however the home side doubled their lead in fortuitous circumstances. Hamilton's cross deflected off Reach and trickled tamely past the wrong-footed Dawson into the goal.

The Owls struck back little more than 5 minutes later when Reach struck a fine volley past Logan to make it 2-1 but that proved to be the end of the scoring.

Wednesday have just one warm-up game remaining - at home to La Liga side Villarreal this Saturday - before their Championship campaign kicks off at Wigan on Saturday August 4th.
