Star's future up in air

The winger, who has been deployed as an emergency left back by new boss Paul Sturrock has impressed in his new position since deputizing for the injured Paul Heckingbottom and Richard Wood.

Chris Turner slapped the former Hartlepool man on the transfer list though due to the form of Chris Brunt and Richard Evans’ return to fitness following a career-threatening injury.

So far, as far as Smith knows, he is still on the market despite Sturrock rating him quite highly.

He told Footymad: “I am still on the transfer list and the boss has not mentioned anything about me coming off it.

“I know there are clubs interested in me at the moment but I have to impress Paul now as he says I have been playing well at left-back but things can change quickly in football.

“Despite bringing in Hasney, the gaffer has marked me down as a defender and if that means me playing week in, week out, I am more than delighted to play there.”

Ideally he would like to stay at Wednesday but if other opportunities come knocking which will give him more chances to shine, he may take them.

“I haven’t got a clue where I see my future at the moment to be honest,” He admitted.

“If it is here, fantastic – I have a house here and I am settled in the area but if I have to go somewhere else to get first-team football, then so be it.”

Smith has settled in well and has proven he is a valuable member of the squad this season, and he has also been impressed with the new manager’s regime.

He continued: “With Paul, his coaching methods are about being very big on hard work and closing people down while playing at a high tempo.

“He encourages the wingers to put lots of crosses in and wants the strikers to work hard and follow up on rebounds, but he still likes to play good football.”
