Stars playing for their future

The Owls boss was angered after another inept display at home to Bournemouth on Wednesday night and claimed there was not enough passion shown by his players.

But with big-money contracts a thing of the past due to the collapse of ITV Digital, gone are the days when players can name their price in the Football League, and most have to settle for one-year deals.

The majority of Wednesday players currently on the books including Kevin Pressman, Derek Geary, Leigh Bromby, Alan Quinn, Mark Robbins, Paul McLaren and Brian Barry-Murphy could all be in the football wilderness when their deals expire in the summer.

Now the Owls boss has told his players that if they do not start to impress him and potential future employers if they do not get offered new Hillsborough contracts, they will be put on the scrapheap.

Turner fumed: "I said to the players three months ago that if you want to play for Sheffield Wednesday and want to take the club back into the first division, show me on the pitch and there will be a contract waiting for you when you show that on a consistent basis.

"I didn’t see that against Bournemouth and the supporters deserved to give their criticism. I can’t see other clubs looking at the players after performances like Chesterfield and Bournemouth."

Harsh words indeed. But it should get them fired up for the away clash with lowly Stockport County tomorrow, where Terry Cooke should be back in the squad as Turner does not have many options for change.
