Trialists feature as Owls enjoy success

Sheffield Wednesday kicked off their pre-season schedule in earnest this season in Malta and enjoyed two wins in two 45 minute matches on the island.

The mini-tournament kicked off for the Owls in the Victor Tedesco Stadium against Floriana, the most successful team in Maltese football history.

Wednesday were led for the first time by newly named Captain Darren Purse and fielded a strong side including American Frank Simek looking to make a return from injury and Marcus Tudgay, the subject of recent transfer speculation.

The Owls won the game thanks to a headed goal from Sean McAllister, playing in a wide midfield role, following good work from Tudgay.

Wednesday were rarely threatened during the game and could have added more themselves with Maltese trialist Etienne Barbara partnering Tudgay in attack.

Wednesday came up against the might of Dingli Swallows in their second fixture, a team on the up having recently been promoted to the Maltese Premier League for the first time in their history.

Unsurprisingly Brian Laws chose to ring the changes and only three players that played in the opening game were picked to start against Swallows.

Former Hull City man, Sheffield-born trialist Ryan France was given the chance to impress out wide but it was Wednesday's other winger Etienne Esajas who scored the only goal of the game and thus clinched the competition for the Owls.

The success is hardly anything to get over-excited about but it's always good for confidence to win these game and not suffer humiliating defeats whilst the most important aspects of pre-season include getting the new players to gel into the team and try out new systems as well as avoid injury and build up fitness ahead of the league kick-off.

The tour concludes with two more matches against different opposition at the same venue on Thursday evening.
