Watson enjoying life - exclusive

The on-loan defender played in midfield against The Shripmers as The Owls won their first game of the year and thinks that the mood will lift from this point on as the club aim to finish the season on a high.

He told Footymad: "Obviously we would have liked to have secured the win a lot earlier to give the fans an easier time but it's just a case of three points at this stage. Our recent performances have seen confidence slip but we had to get the win in the bag, albeit with a bit of luck. But the season starts from here I suppose.

"We did look like a team who hadn't won in a while in the second half against Southend because we were panicking - we were that desperate for the three points. We have endured some bad performances of late and conceded some silly goals so the feel good factor hasn't been there but the lads have always worked hard; the training has been amazingly sharp considering that it's perceived to be all doom and gloom.

"I have always believed that we can do a lot better and I saw Wednesday play brilliantly earlier in the season when I was at West Brom and there's no way why we can't get back to that form - so hopefully the Southend game is the start of that.

The former Everton and Newcastle man is on loan from West Brom until the end of the season and admits that the change in scenery has been good for him.

He added: "To be honest I have played around 15 or 16 games this season but it's nice to be wanted at a massive club like Wednesday. I am not arrogant enough to think that I can walk straight into any team, I have enjoyed the two games I have played at centre half but I also liked playing in midfield against Southend, I don't mind shifting around a bit.

"I'll play anywhere although I don't think I will play in goal mind, but I think centre half is my best position now but I have never been one to tell the gaffer where to play me, it's just a case of going wherever!"

"Settling in has been really easy. I only really knew one person at here and that's Norm (Mark Crossley) and he didn't figure at the weekend, and I only know him from a friend of a friend. It's always hard going into a dressing room with loads of lads you don't really know but it's been a walk in the park so far as everyone's been great around the dressing room. I have fitted right in during my three games here."
