Sheffield Wednesday have today made their first signing of the January transfer window, bringing in Ronnie Wallwork from West Bromwich Albion. The 30-year-old midfielder was released from his contract with the Baggies, allowing Wednesday to pick him up without paying a transfer fee.

Wallwork has spent 3 months on loan at league one side Huddersfield recently and has signed for the Owls until the end of the season with a view to securing a longer deal.

Wednesday will hope that the defensive midfielder will add some bite in the middle of the park and he has gone straight into the squad for the game against Cardiff City this weekend.

It is no secret that Wednesday were looking to let players go in order to bring in new faces and Yoann Folly has been sold to Plymouth Argyle to allow the Owls the opportunity to bring Wallwork in.

Folly had recently requested to be put on the transfer list as he had become frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities at Hillsborough.

The Frenchman now teams up with former Owls boss Paul Sturrock, who was also his manager at
Southampton. Full details of the contract and the fee are yet to be confirmed but it is though the Owls were looking for a fee somewhere in the region of £200,000 for the 22-year-old midfielder.
