A joint-planning proposal will be put forward by both the club and Bloor to the local council before January 2005 for the 13-acre site.

Bloor have promised to keep some historical artefacts in the area, like a Victorian clock tower near the hospital to keep community protesters happy.

The housing company were the preferred bidder in Wednesday’s eyes and depending on the full developable area and the property market, that sum could rise to around £13million and should the deal with Bloor be given planning permission, it will cut the club’s debt to around £15million.

In an official statement chairman Dave Allen said: “It will enable us to reduce our debts to around £15million, at which point we can break even with a wage bill of £2million and gates of 20,000-plus. From that point the club can move on to a sound and successful future."

The club are now on the lookout for a new base with a few locations in mind which are within the city boundaries and a 20-minute drive from Hillsborough.
