Westwood is number 1 for Wednesday fans

Sheffield Wednesday today confirmed that Owls fans have voted goalkeeper Keiren Westwood as their player of the season.

The Republic of Ireland keeper received a massive 78% of the votes cast with Tom Lees coming in as runner-up with 14% and Kieran Lee finishing 3rd on 4%.

Few will be surprised to see Westwood win the award so convincingly as he has been the foundation from which the Owls have enjoyed a successful campaign defensively.

Chris Kirkland had made the Wednesday number 1 spot his own over the previous two seasons since the Owls return to the Championship and many were surprised to see the club sign a keeper of Westwood's stature in the summer with Kirkland also on the books.

The Irishman has hardly put a foot wrong since taking over as number 1 however and has produced continuous man-of-the-match displays as he has contributed to the Owls boasting one of the meanest defences in the Championship.

Westwood has helped the Owls to keep no less than 17 clean sheets in the league this season, equalling a long-standing club record which they will hope they can break over the course of the final 2 matches.
