Whelan impressed when he broke onto the scene following a summer move from Manchester City in the 2004/05 season although he struggled with life in the Championship before being ruthlessly slammed on the transfer list last summer.

But the Irishman fought back to become the first name on the team sheet and added some spectacular goals to his already competitive game.

Brunt told Footymad: "I would go with Glenn being the player of the season I think overall he has been the most consistent, he's chipped in with a few goals as well and there are no arguments from the boys because he's had a great season.

"It's good to have so many players who have had good seasons though; our three strikers in Macca, Deon and Marcus have had good seasons and it all bodes well for next season. Obviously we have to keep hold of players and add a few to the squad and you never know what will happen next season."

Last season was a good one for Wednesdayites and it was the first time, promotion apart of course, where they ended the season smiling although Brunt has a lot of fond memories.

He said: "I don't know about my moment of the season but probably when we beat Barnsley away in December because of the way we played but there have been a lot of high points to be honest.

"Away at Leeds was good and a personal highlight for myself with the goal I scored but overall it's been a pleasing season and we have given the fans reason to come back to Hillsborough. Even if we do lose at home, fans go home knowing we have given our opponents a real game.

"We have had few bad results along the way but I think the majority of fans have been really impressed with us this season."
