Will Premier League price cap affect Championship prices?

With Premier League clubs today agreeing to a price cap on tickets for away fans could this decision have a knock-on effect in the Football League?

The top flight clubs have agreed a deal that will see all clubs charging a maximum of £30 per ticket for away fans from next season for 3 seasons.

With Sheffield Wednesday challenging for a play-off spot their ideal scenario is that they will have to embrace this decision next season as a result of being promoted, but what if Wednesday remain in the Championship next season?

Wednesday have charged visiting fans more than £30 on a number of occasions this season and they are not alone in doing so at this level. The Owls have one of the best away followings in the country and the fans have also often been asked to fork out more than £30 for a ticket on their travels.

Premier League clubs of course have the advantage of huge sponsorship deals and astronomical TV rights packages which mean that ticket revenue accounts for a relatively small proportion of their income.

Football League clubs are not afforded this luxury and are much more reliant of gate revenue as a result but fans are likely to feel understandably aggrieved if they are expected to pay more for football at this level than fans will be paying at the highest level of the sport in England.
