Worrying transfer rumours start to fly

Premier League clubs have been linked in the past week or so with lining up potential bargains from Hillsborough in the January sales and it is thought Wednesday may be forced to sell players if boss Brian Laws wants to add new faces.

Glenn Whelan has been linked with a switch to Derby for around £500,000. Rams boss Paul Jewell has not officially named his targets in public but is looking to strengthen his squad. Whelan was linked with a move to Reading last season for a fee well in excess of £1M, however his market value is rapidly decreasing due to the fact his Owls contract expires in the summer.

Frank Simek has also been linked with a move away and has been rumoured to have attracted the continued interest of Everton. The fee being touted is around £2M but with Simek having signed a new deal before the start of the season Wednesday will hold more control in this case than with Whelan.

The club has also been linked with a move for WBA striker John Hartson. The 32 year old has not been in the Baggies plans this season and has spent a spell on loan at Championship rivals Norwich City.

I am of the opinion that Hartson may not be the answer to our problems upfront as he is too similar a player to current 1st choice forward Sodje in terms of physique and what we really need in this position is a younger player with pace who can stretch the opposition, feed off Sodje and get in behind defences.
