Wednesday pick up the title at city rivals

Sheffield Wednesday Under 18's were crowned as the Professional Development League North Champions for 2018-19 on Saturday afternoon, at the home of their city rivals Sheffield United.

The young Owls visited the Blades knowing that a point would see them win the title but after a goalless first half they fell behind early in the second half when the home side were awarded a very debatable penalty. Not to be denied, the Wednesday youth responded and were level soon after. A United player prevented a certain goal with a handball near the goal line and although the penalty was awarded they escaped without what should have surely been a red card. Conor Grant fired home the spot kick for the visitors.

That proved to be the final goal of the game and on the final whistle the Wednesday youngsters were able to celebrate at the home of their rivals having been backed by plenty of supporters in blue and white.

The result sees Wednesday pip Leeds United to the North division title on goal difference. Both sides go through to the national play-offs with Wednesday set to take on Ipswich who finished 2nd in the South division and Leeds will play Cardiff.
