Youngster set to earn his Spurrs

The central defender, who has mainly played out of position this season at left-back, has been one of the more consistent performers for The Owls this campaign.

19-year-old Spurr has deputised for John Hills throughout most of the season in an unfamiliar position although has shown his promise by partnering Madjid Bougherra at centre back on the odd occasion.

Brian Laws thinks the prospect of Spurr penning a new deal at Hillsborough is good news for the club and hopefully it can be sorted out with no fuss very soon.

Meanwhile, Laws is thinking about giving Peter Gilbert the chance to impress on loan to build up his match fitness.

Wednesday fans have never really seen the best out of the left-back, signed from Leicester last season, and the Owls boss is hoping to send him out for a month or so in a bid for him to come back stronger to challenge the likes of Hills and Spurr.

One other line from Hillsborough today is that Laws is nearing a deal to keep Mark Crossley at the club and there is also a distinct possibility that Wayne Andrews could have a second month at S6 so Wade Small can recover from a minor operation.
